Scholarship Enhancements for LIFE and Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Recipients in Math and Science Programs
Beginning in the fall of 2007, students receiving the LIFE scholarship or the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship MAY be eligible for more scholarship money($2500, in addition to the $5000 LIFE scholarship, for a total of $7500, for Palmetto Fellows, the total award for the Soph, Junior, and Senior Year will be $10,000)) thanks to legislation passed by the S.C. General Assembly in June, 2007. The purpose of this legislation is to increase the number of college graduates in S.C. in the fields of math and science.
The enhancements are being made available for the first time this fall (2007) to students in their sophomore year of college who meet the eligibility criteria (see chart below) for the LIFE or Palmetto Fellow scholarships, and are enrolled and pursuing program majors in the following areas: science, mathematics, computer science or informational technology, engineering, science education, math education, and healthcare and related disciplines including medicine and dentistry.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
LIFE SCHOLARSHIP INITIAL ELIGIBILITY (as a high school graduate)
A student must have 2 of the 3 at the end of the senior year (graduation):
1) 3.0 or higher GPA on the S.C. Uniform Grading Scale
2) Top 30% of the graduating class (at graduation)
3) A score of 1100 on the SAT (Critical Reading and Math only-not writing) or a 24 Composite score on the ACT
PALMETTO FELLOWS INITIAL ELIGIBILITY
Applications for early awards must be submitted to the Commission on Higher Education for the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship by the date established in December each academic year. Students must meet one of the following academic criteria in order to be eligible to apply for the early awards (students cannot use early awards criteria to meet the final awards deadline):
1. Score at least 1200 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT through the November test administration of the senior year; earn a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA at the end of the junior year; and rank in the top six percent of the class at the end of either the sophomore or the junior year
or
2. Score at least 1400 on the SAT or 32 on the ACT through the November test administration of the senior year and earn a minimum 4.00 cumulative GPA at the end of the junior year, without regard to class rank.
